Congress Calls for Review of New Parliament Building Following Water Leakage Issues

Northeast Desk, 2nd August: Congress’ Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, has urged for a comprehensive review of the new Parliament building’s design, construction, and facilities. His call comes amid recent criticism and concerns raised over water leakage issues in the new structure.

In a statement posted on X, Gogoi emphasized the need for the building to embody the esteemed traditions of Indian parliamentary democracy. “The design, construction, and facilities within the new Indian Parliament need to be reviewed. There is much to be done for it to reflect the greatest traditions of Indian parliamentary democracy,” he said.

Gogoi’s remarks followed a day after opposition leaders criticized the Modi government for a water leakage incident in the new Parliament building. Congress MP Manickam Tagore highlighted the issue with a video showing water leaking from the roof of a lobby, which he criticized as an example of the new building’s lack of weather resilience.

Tagore also submitted a notice for an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha to discuss the matter. He remarked on X, “Paper leakage outside, water leakage inside. The recent water leakage in the Parliament lobby used by the President highlights urgent weather resilience issues in the new building, just a year after completion.”

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also criticized the government over the incident.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat responded, attributing the minor water leakage to the displacement of adhesive material used to secure glass domes over the lobby. They assured that corrective measures were promptly implemented and no further leakage was observed. The Secretariat attributed the problem to heavy rains affecting several parts of the national capital region.

Gogoi’s call for a review highlights ongoing concerns and the need for a thorough evaluation of the new Parliament building’s facilities and resilience.
