Congress Charges Assam Chief Minister with State Looting Ahead of 2026 Polls

A storm of accusations has erupted from the All India Congress Committee (AICC) against Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, with AICC General Secretary Jitendra Singh Alwar alleging widespread corruption and state looting by the Chief Minister and his family. The explosive claims were made following a crucial meeting held at Indira Bhawan in New Delhi, where Congress leaders convened to strategize for the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

The meeting, attended by key figures including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Assam’s own Gaurav Gogoi, saw a fervent discussion on the state’s current political climate. Alwar stated that attendees from across Assam voiced concerns about the state being “sold,” the prevalence of “syndicate rule,” and the “mafia rule” they believe is rampant. He emphasized that the central theme was the alleged looting of the state by the Chief Minister and his kin, a matter that dominated the discussions.

Planning for the 2026 elections was a primary focus, with senior Congress leaders outlining campaign strategies. Alwar revealed that Rahul Gandhi had assured the party that senior Congress figures would make frequent visits to Assam leading up to the polls. He also addressed what he termed as “lies” propagated by the ruling party, specifically regarding reservation promises to six communities and discrepancies in promised payments to tea garden workers in the Barak Valley. Alwar further suggested that the ruling party, facing “frustration,” was targeting leaders like Gaurav Gogoi.

Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, echoed the sentiment, asserting the necessity to “uproot the corrupt BJP government” in Assam to “save democracy.” He described the current state of Assam as one marked by “unrest” and called for the “destruction” of what he termed Chief Minister Sarma’s “Lanka of corruption.” Gogoi recounted that both Congress President Kharge and Rahul Gandhi listened to the party leaders from Assam and provided instructions for moving forward.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, in a post on X, conveyed that the people of Assam were ready to reject the “politics of corruption, division, and vendetta.” He emphasized that the 35 million people of Assam were looking to the Congress to bring about change and that “no amount of select-media driven propaganda” could deter their resolve for transformation. Kharge confirmed the meeting with Assam leaders in New Delhi, highlighting its importance in the party’s election preparations.
