Congress Criticizes PM Modi for Kuwait Visit Amid Unrest in Manipur
Imphal: The Congress on Saturday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, labeling him a “frequent flyer PM” for embarking on a two-day visit to Kuwait while unrest continues in Manipur.
The opposition party accused Modi of neglecting the violence-hit state, where ethnic clashes have claimed over 220 lives since May last year.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh expressed the party’s sentiments in a rhyming post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter): “Such is their fate, As Mr Modi refuses to find a date, The people of Manipur continue to wait, While the Frequent Flyer PM is off to Kuwait.”
The Congress has consistently urged Modi to visit Manipur, arguing that his presence could help foster peace and normalcy in the strife-torn region. The ethnic violence, which began on May 3, 2023, during a tribal solidarity march protesting the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status, has since escalated into a prolonged crisis involving the Meitei and Kuki communities.
The Congress has criticized Modi for what it perceives as a lack of direct engagement with the situation in Manipur. While the Prime Minister’s Kuwait visit aims to bolster bilateral relations in areas such as defense and trade, the opposition argues that addressing domestic crises should take precedence.
The Congress’ critique is the latest in a series of political exchanges over the government’s handling of the Manipur crisis, a contentious issue that continues to dominate political discourse in India.
