Congress Criticizes PM Modi’s Remarks on Manipur, Highlights Continued Tensions

National Desk, 3rd July: The Congress party has criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks in the Rajya Sabha regarding Manipur, calling his claim of normalcy “astounding” amidst ongoing tensions in the state. The opposition highlighted that PM Modi has yet to visit Manipur since violence erupted in May last year, despite claiming improvements in the situation.

During the debate on President Droupadi Murmu’s address to Parliament, PM Modi stated that violence in Manipur is decreasing, schools have reopened, and efforts are underway to restore peace with state and central government cooperation. In response, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh pointed out that the situation remains tense, as highlighted by Manipur’s MP in the Lok Sabha recently.

Ramesh criticized PM Modi for not addressing the issue earlier and accused him of ignoring the plight of Manipur by not visiting or meeting with state leaders. The Congress further condemned the government for allegedly silencing Manipur’s second MP during parliamentary proceedings.

Manipur has been grappling with violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May last year, resulting in casualties and displacement. Despite claims of improvement, the Congress asserts that the situation in Manipur demands urgent attention and comprehensive resolution efforts.
