Congress Hails PM Modi’s Rajya Sabha Speech on Manipur Violence as Opposition’s Victory

Northeast Desk, 4th July: The Congress on Thursday declared that Prime Minister Narendra Modi breaking his silence on the Manipur violence during his speech in the Rajya Sabha marks a significant victory for the opposition parties.

A day after PM Modi addressed the issue in the Rajya Sabha, the opposition party emphasized that the entire nation had been awaiting the Prime Minister’s reaction on the matter for the past one and a half years. “He didn’t speak anything about Manipur for the last one and a half years. Finally, yesterday (Wednesday) he broke his silence on Manipur. It is a real victory for the opposition,” stated K C Venugopal, AICC General Secretary (Organisation), in response to a query from reporters.

In his speech on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address to a joint sitting of Parliament, PM Modi remarked that the violence in Manipur is steadily declining and that educational institutions and businesses have resumed operations in most parts of the state. He assured that all efforts are being made to restore complete peace in Manipur.

Recalling his detailed speech on Manipur during the previous Rajya Sabha session, Modi reiterated that the government is continuously striving to bring normalcy back to the state.

Venugopal highlighted that the opposition created a commotion in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday due to the government’s refusal to allow an MP from Manipur five minutes to speak before the PM’s reply on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address. The Alappuzha MP explained that the opposition requested the government to hear Manipur’s voice before the PM’s speech. “They were not ready, and that’s why the ruckus started,” he said, defending the opposition members’ sloganeering during the PM’s speech in the Lok Sabha.
