Congress High Command Bets on Youth with Gaurav Gogoi Taking Helm in Assam

Guwahati: In a significant organisational shake-up, the Indian National Congress has appointed Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi as the new President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). The All India Congress Committee (AICC) made the announcement effective immediately, a move seen as a strategic recalibration ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections in the state.

Gogoi, a three-time MP and son of the revered late former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, conveyed his profound gratitude to the national leadership for placing their faith in him. In an official statement, he acknowledged the trust bestowed upon the younger generation by none other than Indian National Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi, AICC General Secretaries K.C. Venugopal and Jitendra Singh, and Smt. Sonia Gandhi. He also lauded the tenure of his predecessor, Bhupen Kumar Borah, remarking on how Borah-ji had “beautifully led the team.” Gogoi emphasised a collective effort, stating, “Several of our colleagues have now been entrusted with new responsibilities, and we will unitedly work together for the party.”

Paying a heartfelt tribute to his late father, Gaurav Gogoi affirmed his commitment to serving the people of Assam under the guiding principles and wisdom imparted by Tarun Gogoi. He also extended his appreciation to his family, particularly his children, for their unwavering support throughout his political journey. Gogoi appealed to the people of Assam for their blessings and support, aspiring to forge a “new and strong Assam” in the run-up to the crucial Assembly elections.

As part of this comprehensive restructuring, the Congress high command has also named Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Roselina Tirkey, and Pradip Sarkar as the new Working Presidents of the APCC. Bhupen Borah, the outgoing president, will now take on the crucial role of Chairperson of the APCC Campaign Committee, a pivotal assignment as the party gears up for an intense electoral battle. Notably, Roselina Tirkey has been relieved of her previous responsibilities as AICC Secretary, enabling her to dedicate her full attention to her new, vital position within the state unit. This extensive reshuffle further includes the establishment of key committees, designed to spearhead campaign planning and execution across Assam, underscoring the Congress party’s determined push to reclaim its political footing in the state.
