Congress Leader Rashid Alvi Challenges Assam CM’s Allegations Against Gaurav Gogoi’s Wife

New Delhi Congress leader Rashid Alvi has strongly challenged Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s allegations that Gaurav Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth Gogoi, has connections with Pakistani national Ali Sheikh, who is allegedly linked to Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI.

Alvi has demanded concrete proof, questioning the source of the information and why no formal case has been registered if the claims hold weight.

Speaking to reporters, Alvi dismissed the allegations as politically motivated. “I don’t know which Pakistani national’s name he is taking, but first of all, the CM should tell where did this information come from? What proof does he have for this? If indeed some information came to him, then why has no FIR been lodged till now?” he asked.

Criticizing the nature of the accusations, Alvi warned against dragging political opponents and their families into baseless controversies. “The level of politics should not stoop so low. There is a limit for everything. Defaming opposition leaders and their families in the media is not appropriate. Such statements are unfortunate,” he stated.

The controversy erupted after the Assam cabinet directed the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) to investigate Ali Sheikh over suspected anti-India activities. CM Sarma defended the inquiry, stating that legal action would follow if evidence supported the claims. Responding to reports that Gaurav Gogoi might take the matter to court, Sarma remarked, “India is a democratic country. Everybody can take appropriate action. If he goes to the court, it will be very good. Then many matters which today we cannot speak of, we can speak before the judge.”

The Assam government has justified the cabinet’s decision to investigate Ali Sheikh, citing social media activity that allegedly indicated contact between him and Elizabeth Gogoi. However, opposition leaders argue that the case lacks credibility and is being used as a political tool.
