Congress Leaders Meet to Discuss Manipur Crisis, Urge Political Solution

Imphal: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi convened a meeting with party leaders from Manipur to assess the deteriorating situation in the conflict-affected state. The gathering took place at the party’s newly inaugurated AICC headquarters, Indira Bhavan.

Also in attendance were Congress general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal, Manipur in-charge Saptagiri Ulaka, and state Congress chief Keisham Meghachandra Singh, along with other senior leaders. Following the meeting, Venugopal emphasised the need for urgent political intervention.

“Manipur has been embroiled in a devastating civil war for over two years, necessitating a political solution to restore normalcy at the earliest,” he stated.

The ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which began in May 2023, have claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands. Despite the severity of the crisis, peace talks have yielded no significant breakthrough.

The Congress party has consistently urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the state and engage with affected communities, arguing that the Centre’s lack of direct intervention has exacerbated the humanitarian and security crisis.

The meeting was seen as an effort by the Congress leadership to amplify its demand for immediate political action and a sustainable roadmap for peace in Manipur.
