Congress MP Alleges BJP’s Judiciary Stance Masks North Korea-Like Ambitions

Guwahati: Assam’s Congress MP, Gaurav Gogoi, has levelled serious accusations against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming their public stance on respecting the judiciary is a facade. He alleges that the BJP, steered by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), harbours a hidden agenda: to reshape India into a state mirroring the authoritarian regimes of North Korea or Iraq.

Gogoi directly challenged BJP President J.P. Nadda’s recent assertion that the party disavows the controversial remarks made by its MPs, Nishikant Dubey and Dinesh Sharma, regarding the Chief Justice of India. He argues that the BJP’s broader network, especially those within the inner circles of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, are actively engaged in a systematic campaign to degrade the judiciary’s integrity.

He further pointed to the BJP’s apparent unease with recent Supreme Court decisions, citing rulings concerning Tamil Nadu and the Waqf Amendment Act, as evidence of a calculated effort to erode public trust in the judicial system. Gogoi contends that this pattern of criticism is not coincidental, but rather a deliberate strategy.

Despite Nadda’s attempts to distance the BJP from the MPs’ statements, labelling them as personal opinions and not the party’s official position, Gogoi remains unconvinced. He maintains that the BJP’s rhetoric against the judiciary is not an isolated incident but a consistent narrative that casts doubt on the government’s commitment to upholding the Constitution.

Nadda, through his official X (formerly Twitter) account, categorically stated, “The statements made by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey and Dinesh Sharma regarding the judiciary and the Chief Justice of the country have no connection whatsoever with the Bharatiya Janata Party. These are their personal statements, but the BJP neither agrees with such statements nor ever supports them. The BJP outrightly rejects these statements.”

He reinforced the BJP’s purported respect for the judiciary, affirming, “because as a party, we believe that the Supreme Court, along with all courts in the country, is an integral part of our democracy and a strong pillar for the protection of the Constitution”. However, Gogoi’s accusations suggest a deep mistrust and a belief that these words do not reflect the party’s true intentions.
