Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam Criticizes Reimposition of AFSPA in Manipur
Imphal: Manipur Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has strongly criticized the reimposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in six police stations across the state, calling it a “clear sign of the government’s lack of political will” to address the ongoing conflict.
Speaking at a press conference, Akoijam expressed deep dismay over the decision, accusing the Government of India of insensitivity and insincerity in resolving the crisis. “Rather than addressing the root causes of the conflict, the reimposition of AFSPA further exacerbates the suffering of the people of Manipur,” he remarked.
Highlighting the state’s painful history under AFSPA, the MP recalled numerous protests against the law, including tragic instances of self-immolation and other desperate measures by citizens. He condemned the government for disregarding the prolonged struggles of the people and reimposing the act without addressing their concerns.
Akoijam also criticized the erosion of Manipur’s federal structure, pointing out that the state is uniquely burdened by the imposition of AFSPA by both state and central governments. This dual imposition, he argued, undermines the state’s autonomy and governance.
The central government’s justification for the move, citing the need for coordination of armed forces, was dismissed by the MP. He noted that the Unified Headquarters already has a mandate to ensure coordination among security forces, yet it has failed to manage ongoing violence in areas like Churachandpur, Moreh, and other hill districts under AFSPA.
Akoijam urged the government to reconsider its approach and focus on addressing the root causes of the conflict, ensuring peace and justice for the people of Manipur.
