Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi Accuses Government of Muzzling Opposition Over Waqf Bill
Guwahati: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has launched a scathing critique of the BJP-led government, asserting that the recently tabled Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, is a tool to suppress dissenting voices and sow discord within the nation.
Gogoi’s remarks come amidst growing unrest, notably the protests spearheaded by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), which vehemently opposes the proposed legislation.
The parliamentarian alleged a deliberate sidelining of opposition members during the deliberations of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) tasked with reviewing the bill. He detailed an incident where an opposition member was suspended, and claimed that numerous suggestions put forth by the opposition were summarily dismissed. “We saw how an opposition member was suspended in the JPC, and our suggestions were outright rejected. We protested multiple times, but it is clear that this government has no intent to solve real issues. Their only goal is to create hatred in society,” Gogoi stated, emphasizing his belief that the government’s approach was designed to stifle constructive dialogue.
Gogoi further reinforced his accusations by highlighting the perceived disregard for opposition viewpoints within the JPC proceedings. He framed the government’s actions as indicative of an authoritarian tendency, where diverse perspectives are not only ignored but actively suppressed. This, he argued, undermines the democratic principles of open debate and collaborative lawmaking.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, has ignited widespread controversy, with critics expressing concerns that it erodes the autonomy of Waqf boards and potentially encroaches upon Muslim religious properties. Critics believe the changes made will give the government too much power over the Waqf boards. The government, in its defense, has asserted that the amendments are intended to modernize and enhance the efficiency of Waqf management, and to prevent instances of mismanagement and corruption. They maintain that the changes are needed to ensure the smooth operation of the Waqf boards.
