Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi Criticises PM Modi’s Silence on US Tariffs

Guwahati: Congress MP and Lok Sabha Deputy Leader of Opposition Gaurav Gogoi has launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his silence on the 26 percent reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States on Indian goods.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament on Friday, April 4, Gogoi stated that the PM’s silence is deafening, particularly when the Indian economy is facing trouble.

Gogoi emphasised that the new tariffs will have severe negative consequences for India’s economic sectors, including small industries, MSMEs, and the agrarian economy. He questioned PM Modi’s silence on the issue, asking, “Why doesn’t PM Modi speak on this? Where is he?” Gogoi also drew contrasts between Modi’s approach and that of leaders from other affected countries, who have publicly condemned the tariffs.

The Congress leader further alleged that the BJP-led government resorts to divisive politics when facing economic challenges. “It shows that when this government is on a backfoot during the situation of economic crisis, they do politics of polarisation,” he stated.

Gogoi’s criticism comes after the US tariffs were announced by President Donald Trump’s administration on Wednesday, prompting opposition parties to stage protests near Parliament’s Makar Dwar. Several opposition MPs have also filed motions to discuss the deteriorating US-India relations and the economic impact of the new trade measures.
