Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi Criticizes Assam Government’s NRC Stance Amid Political Tensions
Guwahati, September 28, 2024: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has strongly condemned the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government for its recent application to the Supreme Court challenging the Supreme Court-monitored National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam. Gogoi criticized the state government for its failure to implement the NRC effectively, suggesting that political considerations have taken precedence over necessary actions.
“The NRC was conducted under the strict supervision of the Supreme Court, and the current government’s reluctance to adhere to its findings reflects a lack of commitment to the people of Assam,” Gogoi stated. He expressed confidence in the awareness and discernment of Assam’s citizens, asserting that they would respond appropriately to the government’s actions.
In a contrasting statement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma affirmed that the NRC will be enforced and outlined the government’s stance regarding individuals excluded from the list. “Those who are not listed will be pushed to Bangladesh. This is going to be our policy moving forward,” Sarma declared, addressing concerns about demographic shifts in Jharkhand during a press conference.
Sarma emphasized that due legal processes would be followed during the NRC implementation. “Everyone will have the opportunity to present their case when the NRC process begins. But if one fails to prove their Indian citizenship, they will be deported to Bangladesh through legal channels,” he added, reiterating the government’s commitment to uphold national security and integrity.
As political tensions rise over the NRC issue, both parties continue to stake their positions, reflecting the complex socio-political landscape in Assam.
