Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi Criticizes Electoral Bonds as “Legalized Extortion”
Guwahati, 15th March: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has denounced electoral bonds as “legalized extortion” and “formalized kickbacks,” attributing the scheme to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office. He alleged that a major corporate ally might be influencing the Central Government, leading to a scenario where senior bureaucrats are hesitant to express their opinions due to fear. Gogoi cautioned against such actions, warning that they could steer India towards becoming an Asian autocracy.
Gogoi’s remarks underscore the contentious nature of electoral bonds, portraying them as a tool for extracting political favors in exchange for financial contributions. He drew parallels between the scheme and other government policies, suggesting a trend towards centralized decision-making with potential corporate influence.
Earlier, on March 13, Gogoi accused the BJP of manipulating the Election Commission to redraw the Kaliabor Lok Sabha seat boundaries, traditionally a Congress stronghold in Assam. He envisioned a post-2024 India characterized by restored democratic principles and institutional autonomy, advocating for a uniform rule of law unaffected by partisan interests.
In his discourse, Gogoi emphasized the significance of preserving democratic institutions and ensuring equitable governance, independent of political affiliations. His assertions highlight the ongoing debate surrounding electoral funding transparency and its implications for India’s democratic framework.
