Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi Criticizes Tripura Flood Response, Calls for Enhanced Flood Management
Northeast Desk, 23rd August: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has voiced grave concerns over the devastating flood situation in Tripura, urging the central government to provide more substantial support to those affected.
Gogoi took to the microblogging site X to express his distress, stating, “The ongoing flood situation in Tripura is gravely concerning. More than 17 lakh people have been impacted, and 19 have lost their lives, including seven women and children buried under a mudslide. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those affected. I urge the government to ensure adequate support is extended to them.”
The MP also called for improved flood management techniques in the Northeast, highlighting systemic failures in handling such crises. He emphasized, “Nature is unpredictable, but every year, lives are disrupted due to systemic failures. There is an urgent need to evolve better techniques of flood management in the North East.”
In response to the crisis, the central government has approved an advance release of Rs 40 crore to aid flood-affected people in Tripura. The state has been facing severe floods since August 19 due to heavy rainfall, displacing over 60,000 people and resulting in at least 20 deaths. Over 400 relief camps have been established to provide shelter to those affected.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the relief measure, stating, “Given the flood situation in Tripura, the central government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, has approved the release of Rs 40 crore from SDRF to support the affected people.”
Further updates are anticipated as relief efforts continue and additional measures are implemented.
