Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi Pushes for Urgent Debate on Adani Allegations in Lok Sabha
National: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has urged the Lok Sabha to prioritize discussions on allegations of bribery and securities fraud against the Adani Group, moving an adjournment motion notice to address the matter.
The allegations, made by the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), have raised questions about the role of the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) in awarding renewable energy contracts to the conglomerate.
In his notice to the Lok Sabha Secretary General, Gogoi criticized SECI’s silence on the issue, which he argued undermines public trust in India’s renewable energy sector and its commitment to transparency and accountability. “SECI, a central player in India’s renewable energy sector, has inexplicably maintained a stoic silence,” the notice stated, adding that this silence raises concerns about due diligence and the use of public funds.
Gogoi further argued that the allegations against Adani not only tarnish the reputation of SECI but also cast a shadow over India’s renewable energy initiatives, vital for its climate goals and energy security. The Congress MP called for a thorough investigation into SECI’s dealings with the Adani Group, emphasizing that public institutions must prioritize national interests over private business gains.
The motion follows heightened opposition protests in Parliament, with leaders from the INDIA bloc, including Congress’ Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and AAP MP Sanjay Singh, staging demonstrations demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) investigation into the allegations. Protesters held banners and raised slogans, criticizing the government’s perceived inaction on the matter.
The controversy has stalled proceedings in Parliament since the Winter Session began on November 25, with opposition parties also demanding debates on violence in Manipur and Sambhal. The Lok Sabha Secretariat has since urged members to avoid protests near Parliament gates, citing disruptions to movement and operations.
The Winter Session is set to continue until December 20, leaving the government under mounting pressure to address the opposition’s demands for greater accountability and transparency.
