Congress Predicts BJP Defeat in Assam By-Elections, Cites Government Failures

Guwahati, 18th August: Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah has predicted a significant defeat for the BJP in the upcoming by-elections for five Assembly segments in the state. The by-polls for Dholai, Sidli, Bongaigaon, Behali, and Samaguri were necessitated by the election of the current legislators to Parliament in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Borah criticized the BJP, attributing the party’s expected failure to widespread dissatisfaction among the electorate. He pointed to unresolved issues such as rising electricity tariffs and the cost of essential commodities as major voter concerns. “The government is not addressing these problems, leading to growing anger among the people,” Borah said.

Highlighting the BJP’s shortcomings, Borah noted that while there are 36 lakh unemployed youths in Assam, only one lakh jobs have been filled, with no new posts created. He accused the BJP government of failing to meet its promises and of inadequately addressing the unemployment crisis.

Borah also took aim at Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, criticizing the gap between the BJP’s promises and their actual performance. “J.P. Nadda once claimed that Assam would set an example in job creation, and CM Sarma promised that the state would become one of the top five in the country. Unfortunately, these promises have not materialized. The government’s failure to address the needs of the remaining 35 lakh unemployed youths is a testament to its ineffectiveness,” Borah asserted.

The Congress plans to leverage these issues in their campaign, aiming to highlight the government’s failures and galvanize voter support in the forthcoming by-elections.
