Congress Promises Daily Wage Increase for Assam’s Tea Garden Workers
Guwahati, 12th April: As part of their Shramik Nyay campaign, the Congress party has guaranteed a daily wage of Rs 400 for every tea garden worker in Assam. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh highlighted the disparity between promises made by the BJP in 2016, which pledged a minimum wage of Rs. 351 per day, and the actual increase to Rs. 250 in October 2023 by the Assam Government.
In contrast, the Congress party’s Paanch Nyay Pachees Guarantee assures a daily wage of Rs 400 to tea garden workers if voted to power. Earlier, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi raised serious allegations against individuals associated with the BJP, including relatives of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and central ministers. Gogoi accused them of purchasing bankrupt tea gardens in Assam and promptly selling them overnight to establish different enterprises on the acquired lands.
Describing the situation as a “bigger scam” than the electoral bonds controversy, Gogoi expressed grave concerns regarding the future of tea garden workers in the state. He highlighted the plight of thousands of workers facing unemployment due to this purported trend. Gogoi elaborated on the alleged scheme, stating that the sudden change in ownership has led to delays in workers receiving wages and essential supplies, ultimately aiming to push them out of the estates for alternative industrial purposes.
