Congress Raises Alarm Over Assam Government’s Borrowing Surge, Questions Fiscal Management
Guwahati, 4th October: The Congress party has raised serious concerns about the borrowing spree undertaken by the Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. In a press briefing held today, Congress president Bhupen Borah revealed that the state government has taken loans amounting to Rs 2,250 crore in just 22 days, between September 17 and October 8.
“You will be surprised to know that in the last 22 days, the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government has borrowed Rs 2,250 crore,” Borah said, addressing the media in Bongaigaon. The Congress leader further compared the current government’s borrowing trends to previous administrations, highlighting that from 1947 to 2016, Assam borrowed Rs 41,964 crore in total. By contrast, the BJP-led government under Sarbananda Sonowal, which included Sarma as a key figure, took loans totaling Rs 66,000 crore.
Borah emphasized that the Congress party is alarmed by the rapid pace at which the current administration is incurring debt. He raised concerns over the state’s financial management and the potential long-term impact on Assam’s fiscal stability.
“We urge the government to clarify how these borrowed funds are being used and to provide transparency about its financial priorities,” Borah added.
As of now, the Assam government has not issued a formal response to these allegations. Political observers and the public are closely watching for an official statement or clarification from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s office on the borrowing issue.
