Congress Takes Swipe at Modi’s Performance in Lok Sabha Polls

National Desk, 8th June: Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh has taken a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s electoral performance in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, labeling it as “pathetic.” Ramesh questioned the claims of Modi receiving a ‘mandate’ for a third consecutive term, highlighting his post on X (formerly Twitter) on June 8.

In his post, Ramesh criticized the “drumbeaters” attempting to justify Modi’s results as a mandate, questioning how leading a party to 240 seats and becoming an “ek-tihaaii Pradhan Mantri” (one-third Prime Minister) can be considered a mandate.

Drawing comparisons with former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Ramesh pointed out Nehru’s three instances of securing two-thirds majorities in Parliament while remaining a “complete democrat,” nurturing the institution with his constant presence.

Ramesh also noted that Modi is not the only Prime Minister since Nehru to be sworn in thrice, citing examples of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Indira Gandhi, who held office multiple times.

Accusing the “drumbeaters” of seeking justifications for Modi’s “pathetic electoral performance” in the 2024 polls, Ramesh’s remarks highlight the ongoing political discourse surrounding Modi’s re-election and the mandate received by his party.

Prime Minister Modi recently met President Droupadi Murmu on June 7 to stake claim to form the government as the leader of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) after being elected as the NDA Parliamentary Party leader. His third successive term as Prime Minister is expected to commence with his oath-taking ceremony on June 9.
