Congress’s Manjila Bibi Achieves Historic Victory as BJP Gains Ground in Dhubri Zilla Parishad Elections

Guwahati: In an electoral feat that has resonated across Dhubri, Congress candidate Manjila Bibi has emerged victorious in the Rupshi Zilla Parishad constituency, amassing a remarkable 38,319 votes. This overwhelming mandate significantly surpassed the tallies of her closest competitors, with the BJP securing 11,692 votes and the AIUDF trailing with 10,786 votes in the same region.

The wider Zilla Parishad elections, encompassing five assembly constituencies within Dhubri, have painted a picture of a rapidly shifting political landscape. The BJP has made substantial advancements, capturing five seats, notably in the Bilasipara and Golakganj assembly constituencies. Their victories in Agomoni-Halakura, Golakganj, Raniganj, Salkocha, and Gangadhar have been hailed as “spectacular” by local political analysts, marking a significant departure from the historical dominance of the Congress and AIUDF in the area.

A point of keen interest among observers is the recent delimitation of constituencies, a process that altered geographical boundaries and renamed certain areas, which is being considered a potential catalyst for the observed electoral shifts.

Despite the BJP’s notable gains, the Congress party has demonstrated its enduring influence by securing ten Zilla Parishad seats. Their winning constituencies include Bahir-Salmara, Jhagrarpar, Motirchar, Folimari, Lakhiganj, Adabari, Sindurai, Rupshi, Panbari-Rangamati, and Raidak.

The AIUDF has managed to retain a presence, winning three seats in Chalakura, Gaspara, and Fakirganj-Airkata. Additionally, Raijor Dal has secured one seat in Mahamaya, and an independent candidate has emerged victorious in the Nayeralga-Tilapara Zilla Parishad constituency.

The overall outcome of the Dhubri Zilla Parishad elections points towards a complex and evolving political scenario within the district. The Congress party’s impressive showing, highlighted by Manjila Bibi’s unprecedented victory, alongside the BJP’s significant inroads, underscores the shifting political currents and the potential impact of the recent delimitation exercise on the region’s electoral dynamics.
