Construction Worker Jailed for Attempted Molestation in Meghalaya
Shillong: In a significant stride for justice in Meghalaya, a construction worker has been handed down a rigorous imprisonment sentence for attempting to molest and rape a woman in the South West Garo Hills district. The verdict, delivered by the Special Judge (POCSO) Court, brings closure to a case that originated nearly a decade ago.
The incident dates back to April 14, 2015, when a formal complaint was lodged at the Mahendraganj Police Station. The complainant alleged that Muslim Miah, who was engaged in construction work at her residence, had followed the victim, grasped her hand, and attempted to sexually assault her. Police acted swiftly upon receiving the complaint, registering a case and initiating an investigation under Section 8 of the POCSO Act, 2012. The probe was subsequently entrusted to WPSI Bernadeth K Sangma, leading to the submission of a chargesheet on April 29, 2015.
After a thorough trial, the Special Judge (POCSO) Court in South West Garo Hills pronounced Muslim Miah guilty on June 19, 2025. The court has sentenced him to three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 2,000. In the event of default in paying the fine, Miah will face an additional month of simple imprisonment.
Superintendent of Police Vikash Varma disseminated this crucial information via an official press statement issued on July 24, 2025, urging media houses to publicise the details to enhance public awareness regarding such offences and their repercussions.
