Guwahati, 20th June: Continuous rainfall has led to severe waterlogging across Guwahati since Sunday, June 16, bringing city life to a standstill. The inundation has caused major traffic jams, particularly on Maniram Dewan Road, a vital artery linking Bamunimaidan with Chandmari, stranding vehicles for extended periods and creating significant inconvenience for commuters.
The situation on Maniram Dewan Road has been exacerbated by the ongoing construction of a 6km flyover connecting Dighalipukhuri with Bamunimaidan, which began in December last year. The construction has already narrowed the road, causing frequent congestion even under normal circumstances. The recent waterlogging has compounded the issue, making the stretch almost impassable.
Beyond Maniram Dewan Road, the relentless rain since Sunday night has submerged several other areas, including Hatigaon, Rukmini Gaon on GS Road, Maligaon, Beltola, Rajgarh, Nabin Nagar, and Anil Nagar. These low-lying regions have faced severe waterlogging for over a decade, and the current deluge has worsened the situation, disrupting daily life and vehicular movement.
Overflowing sewage water has entered many homes in the affected areas, damaging valuable possessions. While floodwaters have receded in some localities, others remain submerged, continuing to impact the daily lives of residents.
