Cop Turned Poacher: Arunachal Constable Arrested in Assam Forest
JORHAT, Assam: In a shocking turn of events, an Arunachal Pradesh police constable was apprehended by Assam’s forest department on Sunday night for allegedly poaching in the sensitive Tikupani Reserved Forest.
The accused, identified as Wangdem Chikcha, a resident of Upper Kulam village in Tirap district, is currently serving as a constable with the 2nd Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) in Changlang district.
Forest officials, acting on a tip-off, conducted a late-night operation led by Pramod Phukan. During the raid, Chikcha was caught red-handed, while two of his accomplices managed to evade arrest and are currently being pursued by the authorities.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the involvement of law enforcement personnel in illegal activities, particularly in ecologically sensitive border regions. It underscores the urgent need for increased vigilance and cooperation between the two states to protect these fragile ecosystems.
