Cop’s Corruption Catches Cops: Manipur Suspends Five for ‘Grave Misconduct’
Imphal: In a significant move signalling a no-nonsense approach to internal discipline, the Manipur Police have suspended five of their own, including a high-ranking inspector, following allegations of grave misconduct.
The suspensions, a result of orders issued by Director General of Police Rajiv Singh, are being widely seen as a strong message against corruption within the force.
The suspended officers, whose misconduct was not officially detailed in the police statement, are believed to be linked to a serious case involving the alleged release of drug peddlers in exchange for bribes.
Inspector Ningthoujam Devdas Singh, who was in charge of the Imphal East Commando Unit, has been suspended with immediate effect.
As per the order, he is restricted to the office of the Superintendent of Police, Imphal East, during his suspension and cannot leave without permission. Alongside him, Sub Inspector B Debson Singh and Constable Tarique Aziz of the same unit have also been placed under suspension.
The list of suspended personnel also includes Head Constable Md Rakib from the Thoubal commando unit and Jemadar Md Amin Shah of the 7th Battalion of Manipur Rifles.
While the police have remained tight-lipped on the specifics, sources familiar with the matter revealed that the suspensions are connected to a high-profile case where drug peddlers, apprehended with a substantial quantity of narcotics, were allegedly let go after a monetary deal.
The case has also brought to light the checkered past of one of the suspended officers, Sub Inspector Debson Singh, who had previously been arrested in 2013 for his alleged involvement in transporting drugs valued at over ₹3 crore.
This decisive action is being hailed by senior officials as a demonstration of the force’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on corruption and indiscipline, a necessary clean-up effort to restore public trust.
