Counting Underway for Maharashtra, Jharkhand Assembly Elections and Assam Bypolls
Assam– The counting of votes for the Maharashtra Assembly elections, Jharkhand Assembly polls, and by-elections across 15 states began at 8 a.m. today, with Assam witnessing high-stakes contests in five constituencies: Dholai (SC), Sidli (ST), Bongaigaon, Behali, and Samaguri.
In Samaguri, a key seat for the Congress, Tanzil Hussain, son of Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain, is locked in a closely watched battle against BJP’s Diplu Ranjan Sarma. The constituency has been a Congress stronghold, making this a critical test for the party’s regional dominance.
Behali has turned into a four-way contest, with Congress’s Jayanta Borah, a former BJP member, facing off against Diganta Ghatowal (BJP), Lakhikanta Kurmi (CPI[ML]), and Ananta Gogoi (AAP). The crowded field reflects shifting political dynamics in the region.
In Bongaigaon, Diptimoyee Choudhury of the BJP’s ally, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), is engaged in a direct clash with Congress candidate Brajenjit Singha. This seat could gauge the AGP’s continued sway in the alliance’s strongholds.
Dholai is witnessing a face-off between BJP’s Nihar Ranjan Das and Congress’s Dhrubajyoti Purkayastha, adding to the BJP-Congress rivalry dominating the bypolls.
Sidli marks Congress’s return to the fray after a 20-year hiatus, with Sanjib Warie taking on Nirmal Kumar Brahma (UPPL) and Suddho Kumar Basumatary (BPF). Both UPPL and BPF are part of the BJP-led coalition, making this an intriguing contest within Assam’s tribal belt.
Currently, four of these five constituencies—Dholai, Sidli, Behali, and Bongaigaon—are held by the BJP-led coalition, while Samaguri remains a Congress bastion. The BJP, supported by allies AGP and UPPL, controls 75 of Assam’s 126 Assembly seats, positioning it as the state’s dominant political force.
The results of these bypolls are expected to shape Assam’s political landscape ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
