Covid-19 Positive prisoner Escapes From Hospital

Guwahati: A dreaded robber and a suspected drug racketeer have allegedly escaped from a hospital in the Lakhimpur district of Assam on Saturday morning.

The criminal was identified as Gerjai Boruah of Dhakuakhana Bhati Jalbhari Gaon under the Dhakuakhana Police Station of the district.

Boruah was in the hospital receiving medical treatment after testing positive for Covid-19.

According to reports, he was arrested in September last year as a suspected narcotics smuggler and feared robber.

However, he suffered a bullet injury during a police encounter while he allegedly tried to flee.

According to hospital sources, despite being under police supervision, he was not properly handcuffed.

Furthermore, Boruah had already served an eight-year sentence in prison. He was convicted of multiple theft and robbery crimes and later he was released in 2020.

It may be noted that he apparently continued his illicit operations in the area immediately after his release.
