Crackdown in Manipur: Six Suspected Militants Nabbed, Arms Seized
Imphal: Security forces in Manipur have had a busy weekend, launching a series of targeted anti-insurgency operations across three districts that led to the apprehension of six suspected militants and the significant recovery of firearms and explosives. The concerted efforts underscore the ongoing commitment to maintain peace and order in the region.
The most impactful of these operations unfolded on June 14, deep in Kamjong District, specifically near the tranquil Taret river. Here, a proactive team successfully cornered and apprehended three individuals, unearthing a cache of weaponry that raises serious concerns.
Among those taken into custody were two alleged members of the proscribed Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL). They have been identified as Bidyananda Shijagurumayam, a 25-year-old hailing from Khurai Thongam Leikai in Imphal East, and Tonsana Moirangthem, 27, from Moirang Thamnapokpi in Bishnupur District. The third individual apprehended in this sweep was Omikanta Nongmaithem, also 27, from Wangjing Lamding Bazaar in Thoubal District, who has been linked to the Kanglei People’s Congress (KCP).
From this trio, security personnel meticulously recovered a substantial haul. This included two pistols – a 7.65mm weapon loaded with two live rounds, and a .22 calibre pistol with three rounds – alongside a worrying stash of 25 detonators. Further searches yielded Rs 1,840 in Indian currency, 20,000 Myanmar kyat, and two mobile phones, adding to the evidence gathered against them.
The momentum continued into June 15, with forces conducting two more separate, successful operations. Near the bustling Sawombung Bridge in Imphal East District, officials apprehended Takhellambam Gandhi Singh, also known by his alias Thouba. The 25-year-old, identified as a member of KCP (MC Progressive) and hailing from Thoubal District, was found with a mobile phone, SIM card, and his Aadhaar card.
Later the same day, a team operating in Thoubal District’s Shikhong Shemai Bazar successfully detained two cadres belonging to the KCP (MFL) faction. The arrested individuals have been identified as Songam Hungyo, a 19-year-old from Sada Lungthar, and Toijam Jamson Meitei, 25, known as Boro, from Kongpal Kongkham Leikai. Both were found to be in possession of mobile phones at the time of their arrest.
