Crackdown on child marriage: 17-year-old girl commits suicide in Assam
Guwahati: In a tragic incident, a 17-year-old girl committed suicide in Cachar district of Assam.
The incident came to light on Sunday (February 5).
The deceased girl identified as Mahmuda Begum was a resident of Khaspur village of Rajnagar Gaon Panchayat under Dhalai police station Cachar.
As per sources, the minor committed suicide after her parents their vow and refused to provide their approval for her to marry the boy she was in love with
It needs to be mentioned that the minor fell in love with a young man and her parents promised to marry her.
However, the girl’s parents refused to provide their approval for the marriage after the Assam government launched a campaign against child marriage and implemented legal limitations.
Following this, the girl committed suicide.
It needs to be noted that since the Assam government began a campaign against child marriage, as many as 4074 cases have been reported and 2258 people have been arrested in the past two days.
Biswanath district has the highest number of arrested persons which stands at 139 and 97 cases have been registered in the district. On the other hand, Barpeta district has the second-highest number of arrests made which stands at 128 and the total number of cases registered is 81.
Besides this, Dhubri has the third highest number of arrested persons which stands at 127 and 374 cases have been registered against child marriage in the district.
It should be noted that the districts with the biggest concentrations of minorities are where the arrests have been made.
Interestingly, arrests have also been made in the Majuli district which has around 592 Muslim populations. A total of 43 cases of child marriage have been reported in the district and 24 arrests have been made thus far.
