Criminal Case Initiated Against Meghalaya’s Director General of Police Over Alleged Misuse of Official Vehicle

Northeast Desk, 10th May: Meghalaya Police have taken action against the state’s Director General of Police (DGP), Lajja Ram Bishnoi, on May 9, following accusations of misusing his official position and tampering with the registration number of his official vehicle. The case stems from a formal complaint filed by suspended police officer Gabriel K Iangrai, alleging offenses such as criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, forgery, and cheating against the DGP.

According to Iangrai’s complaint, an inquiry committee report from July 2022 revealed discrepancies in the registration of a Hyundai Verna parked at the Central Workshop. The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG-A) purportedly failed to register the vehicle due to missing documents. Iangrai further alleged that the registration number of the DGP’s white Kia Carnival limousine corresponds to a Verna registered with the state Tourism Department, based on information obtained through a Right to Information (RTI) application.

Additionally, Iangrai claimed that Bishnoi allegedly changed the number plate of the Kia Carnival upon assuming office as DGP in Shillong in May 2022. He accused Bishnoi of using the requisitioned vehicle for personal purposes, despite its cost exceeding the entitlement for the DGP’s official vehicle.

The FIR submitted by Iangrai includes photographs and RTI evidence, urging the prosecution of the outgoing DGP under appropriate laws. The case has raised concerns about potential abuse of power and misconduct by the state’s highest-ranking police officer, prompting questions regarding accountability and institutional integrity in law enforcement.

Confirming the registration of the case based on Iangrai’s FIR, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Rituraj Ravi, stated that an investigation would commence into the allegations against the DGP.
