CWG 22: Avinash Sable Bags Silver In 3000m Steeplechase
Guwahati: Avinash Mukund Sable won the silver medal on Saturday in the 3,000-meter steeplechase competition at the Commonwealth Games 2022 (CWG). India now has 28 medals overall after today.
Sable also set a new record with it, clocking an 8.11.20, breaking the previous record.
He had a strong start and established a lead after 500 metres, but three Kenyans, Kibiwot, Kipruto, and Serem, quickly caught up to him and dropped him to fourth place.
However, he made an attempt and passed two Kenyans with four metres to go while Sable was still in front.
Then, with the match between Kibiwot and him, Sable tripped in his final 100 meters handing his opponent the edge.
He finished second, earning the silver medal. This gives the country a total of two more medals.
Priyanka Goswami made history earlier by being the first Indian woman to take home a racewalking medal from the CWG. Today’s 10,000-meter racewalk for ladies saw Goswami win the silver medal.
