Cycling Passion Fuels a Family Legacy in Meghalaya Games 2025

Shillong: Banshanlang Khyllait, a cyclist from Dongki Ingding in Meghalaya’s Eastern West Khasi Hills district, is making waves in the 6th Meghalaya Games 2025.

His journey, fueled by perseverance and a passion for cycling, has not only transformed his life but also inspired an entire family to embrace the sport.

Banshanlang’s fascination with cycling began when his father purchased a cycle for work. Using it to commute to school, Banshanlang gradually built his stamina. In 2010, he bought his first personal cycle and, by 2012, secured second place in his debut cycling competition.

“As I started practicing every day, I felt the brakes of life trying to break me down, but I never gave up,” Banshanlang shared, reflecting on his journey.

This early success ignited his determination to excel, leading him to participate in state-level competitions and become a role model for his family. Today, Banshanlang’s four siblings, nieces, and nephews are accomplished cyclists, representing Meghalaya in national and private events.

Among them is his youngest brother, 23-year-old Kevinjohn Khyllait, who won the Men’s Elite category at the 6th Meghalaya Games 2025. “My father bought the first cycle in our house, and my brother Banshanlang is my inspiration,” Kevinjohn said.

Kevinjohn started cycling in 2018 and has achieved notable success in just five years. Alongside his nephew, he won silver and bronze medals in the XCO and Road Race categories at the North East Olympic Games. He has also represented Meghalaya in national events twice, finishing fifth on both occasions.

In 2023, Kevinjohn narrowly missed the opportunity to represent India at the Asian Games and the Asian Championship but remains committed to achieving international success.

Banshanlang, now 32, is one of the founding members of the Meghalaya Cycling Association (MCA), which has grown from nine members to over 200 across the state. The association provides international-standard coaching and equipment, empowering local cyclists to compete at higher levels.

Banshanlang’s participation in events like the Epic 17K competition in Sikkim has enriched him with valuable experiences, which he now shares to inspire aspiring cyclists. “With these experiences, I intend to inspire youths to take cycling to the next level,” he stated.

The Khyllait family’s success aligns with the Meghalaya government’s Sports Policy, aimed at nurturing athletes who can compete nationally and internationally. Their story serves as a testament to the power of hard work and the potential of grassroots sports development in the state.
