Cyclone Hamoon Brewing in Bay of Bengal, Issues Yellow Alert Over Northeast by IMD

Guwahati, 23rd October: Following the recent occurrence of Cyclone Tej in the Arabian Sea, another cyclone is now developing in the Bay of Bengal, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). According to the IMD’s latest observations, the depression in the west-central Bay of Bengal has been gradually moving northwards at a rate of 17 kmph over the past six hours, intensifying into a deep depression as of 5.30 pm.

The IMD anticipates that this weather system will continue to gain strength, evolving into a cyclonic storm within the next 24 hours. Their forecasts indicate that this newly-formed cyclone, named Hamoon, is likely to maintain a northward trajectory until the morning of October 23. Subsequently, it is expected to shift towards the north-northeast and is projected to make landfall on the Bangladesh coast between Khepupara and Chittagong around the evening of October 25, manifesting as a deep depression.

The regions most likely to be affected by this cyclone include the coastal areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh. In response to this development, the IMD has issued yellow alerts for parts of the Northeastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, effective until October 26, 2023, due to the expected heavy rainfall and weather-related concerns associated with Cyclone Hamoon.
