Cyclone ‘Mandous’ Weakens Into Deep Depression After Crossing Coast North Tamil Nadu

Guwahati: The severe cyclone “Mandous,” which made landfall along the beaches of Tamil Nadu late on Friday night, has begun to lose strength.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in a statement said, “Depression weakened into a Well-Marked Low-Pressure Area over north interior Tamil Nadu and neighbourhood.”

The Depression over north Tamil Nadu drifted nearly west-southwestward over the previous six hours before weakening even more and lying as a Low-Pressure area across the region on Saturday evening.

“It is very likely to move nearly west-southwestwards and weaken gradually further,” the IMD further said.

The KVB Puram Mandal in the Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh received the most 258 mm of rainfall as a result of the cyclone on Saturday.

As cyclonic storm Mandous passed through the states on Saturday after making landfall in Andhra Pradesh, it dumped a lot of rain and had strong gusts in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu.

In several sections of Chennai, there was flooding, while the Chengalpattu district experienced tree uprooting due to squalls.

Around 10 flights were also cancelled at Chennai Airport because of the unfavourable weather brought on by storm Mandous.

Mandous will start to deteriorate into a severe depression and then a depression on Saturday, according to an earlier forecast from IMD.

However, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the corresponding state disaster response forces have been sent in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, along with the necessary manpower.

Four people died in Tamil Nadu after Cyclone Mandous made landfall off Mamallapuram and caused significant rains in Chennai and the state’s coastal regions.
