Darjeeling MP Raju Bista Pushes for Key Infrastructure Projects in Meeting with Nitin Gadkari

National: Darjeeling MP and BJP National Spokesperson Raju Bista met Union Minister for Road, Transport, and Highways Nitin Gadkari today to discuss the acceleration of crucial infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and economic growth in the Darjeeling hills, Terai, and Dooars regions.

The meeting focused on major highway expansions, new road links, and sustainable transport solutions to address long-standing issues of accessibility and traffic congestion.

Bista emphasized the urgent need for an alternative highway linking Darjeeling to Siliguri via Balason and Ghoom, which would provide a safer and more efficient travel option while easing congestion on existing routes.

The new road would also improve access for key locations such as Kurseong, Mirik, Sonada, Rangbull, and Sukhia Pokhari. Additionally, discussions covered the proposed Siliguri Ring Road, which aims to decongest the city and streamline transportation for both residents and commercial activities.

Another major proposal included a new highway connecting Darjeeling to Teesta via Lebong and Dabai Pani, offering alternative routes that would support regional trade and tourism.

Bista also underscored the need for expanding National Highway 55 and shifting its maintenance to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to ensure timely upgrades and better upkeep. Furthermore, he advocated for the construction of a new bridge alongside the historic Coronation Bridge to accommodate growing traffic volumes and enhance road safety.

Beyond highways, Bista proposed multiple ropeway projects under the Parvatmala scheme to provide sustainable transport solutions and improve accessibility to remote areas. Key proposals included ropeway connections between Bijanbari and Darjeeling town, Lebong and Chowrasta, and Mineral Spring and Teesta. These projects would not only reduce travel time but also support tourism and local economies.

Responding positively to the proposals, Gadkari assured Bista that the projects would be taken up on a priority basis and directed officials to expedite the necessary processes. Expressing his gratitude, Bista stated that once completed, these initiatives would significantly improve the quality of life for people in the region, foster economic opportunities, and transform connectivity in Darjeeling and its surrounding areas.
