Darrang ASP Rupam Phukan Detained By CID In Murder Case
Guwahati: The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of the Assam Police arrested the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of the Darrang district on Monday.
According to reports, the name of ASP Rupam Phukan came up while corrupt officer Utpal Bora was being questioned about a murder case that had been reported to the Dhula Police Station.
Meanwhile, the officer in-charge (OC) of Dhula Police Station, Utpal Bora was arrested on November 1 when it was discovered that he had been careless in doing his duties in the case of the murder of a tribal girl.
His residence in at Jyotinagar in Assam’s Mangaldoi had been sealed after his detention, and the CID team conducted an operation there a few days later with his wife there.
In the case, Bora was subjected to protracted interrogation during which he admitted to accepting payment to discredit the case. According to officials, Bora admitted to doing so on the orders of ASP Rupam Phukan.
Rupam Phukan was apprehended by CID today and brought in for questioning based on Utpal Bora’s statement.
It should be noted that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was involved in the investigation. Three police officers had previously been suspended in relation to the incident.
CID agents found five expensive watches, each worth thousands of dollars, during the raids on Utpal Bora’s residence. Moreover, they seized the registration papers for high-end foreign-made vehicles.
