Dasanglu Pul Makes History as Arunachal Pradesh’s First Woman Minister in Two Decades

Northeast Desk, 13th June: In a landmark moment for Arunachal Pradesh, Dasanglu Pul was sworn in as a minister on June 13, marking the first time in 20 years that a woman has held a cabinet position in the state government. The oath-taking ceremony, held at the Dorjee Khandu Convention Hall in Itanagar, was attended by several dignitaries including Union Ministers Amit Shah, J.P. Nadda, and Kiren Rijiju, alongside chief ministers from Sikkim and Assam.

At 46 years old, Dasanglu Pul represents the Hayuliang assembly constituency in Anjaw district. She entered politics by winning a by-election in 2016 following the passing of her husband, former chief minister Kalikho Pul. She has since secured re-election twice, in 2019 and 2024, solidifying her position as one of Arunachal Pradesh’s prominent women leaders.

Prior to her cabinet appointment, Pul served as an adviser to the Women and Child Development department, focusing on key social issues. Her elevation to the ministerial role is seen as a significant stride towards enhancing women’s representation in the state’s governance structures.

Currently, Arunachal Pradesh boasts four women MLAs in total, including Tsering Lhamu from Lumla, Chakat Aboh from Khonsa West, and Nyabi Jini Dirchi from Basar, reflecting a growing trend towards greater gender diversity in the state assembly.
