Death Toll Due to Floods Rises to 107 in Assam

Guwahati: Assam floods have claimed the lives of seven more people, including two children in the last 24 hours and the situation is still dire. The number of fatalities increased to 107 with the latest deaths, 17 of whom were caused by landslides.

The seven new deaths include two from the newly constituted districts of Bajali and Tamulpur, one each from Dhubri, Cachar, and Barpeta and two from Cachar. There are still flood waters engulfing 4,536 settlements in total. With over 10.32 lakh affected, Barpeta is the worst-hit district, followed by Nagaon with over 5.03 lakh displaced residents.

The number of people impacted by flooding decreased to 45.34 lakh across 30 districts of the state, signalling a minor improvement in the situation.

In 759 relief camps established by the respective district administrations throughout the 30 impacted districts, 2.84 lakh people are currently finding refuge. According to the ASDMA report, the River Brahmaputra, Disang, and Kopili are flowing above the danger level mark in the districts of Dhubri, Sivasagar, and Nagaon.

Meanwhile, according to Integrated Child Development Services, children are required to take part in preschool programmes in the relief camp, according to news agency ANI.

Assam’s flood crisis is being closely monitored by the federal government, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who also stated that the federal government is collaborating closely with the state administration to offer all support necessary to meet the challenge.

“Teams from the Army and the NDRF are on-site in the flood-affected districts. They are carrying out evacuation procedures and helping people who are impacted. As part of the evacuation effort, the Air Force has flown more than 250 flights,” said he.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted on Thursday, “Over the last several days, regions of Assam have suffered floods due to severe rainfall. I am deeply concerned about the destruction caused by the calamity. The Assam situation is being actively monitored by the Central Government, which is also collaborating closely with the State Government to offer all support necessary to meet this challenge.
