Death Toll Rises to 29 in Cyclone Remal Aftermath: 15 Killed in Melthum Quarry Landslide

Northeast Desk, 29th May: The devastating aftermath of Cyclone Remal has claimed 15 lives in the Melthum quarry landslide alone, bringing the overall death toll in the state to 29.

Multiple landslides, triggered by the catastrophic cyclone, wreaked havoc across the state, with the Melthum quarry collapse emerging as the worst-hit area.

Following a massive search operation launched by authorities on May 29 morning, the body of 14-year-old Gloria MS Dawngliani was recovered around 1 pm. However, around 8 to 9 bodies are yet to be recovered, according to the latest reports.

The bodies of several individuals have been recovered and identified, including Pu Lalduhthlanga (66), Pi Baby Zoremsiami (36), Abel Lalmalsawma (4), Dorothy Lalruatkimi (20), Thangtluanga (47), Lalremtluanga (32), Lalduhawmi (34), Lalhlimpuii (6), Beetu Manjit, Sunjay Rai, Diup Manji, Gumeswar Chaudury, Lalnunsiami (45), and Muanzova (55).

However, the bodies of Lalthakima (42), Lalvenhima (6 months), and Deborah Lalawmawmi (12) remain unrecovered, along with approximately five other non-Mizos.

The catastrophic landslides and torrential rains, induced by Cyclone Remal, have disrupted normalcy across the state, prompting ongoing search operations in affected areas to recover the remaining bodies.

The death toll highlights the severity of the situation in the wake of Cyclone Remal, underscoring the urgent need for continued efforts to restore stability and aid affected communities.
