Delhi Dy CM expresses ‘heartfelt gratitude’ to people after AAP secures victory

Guwahati: Delhi Deputy Chief Minster Manish Sisodia on Wednesday thanked the people of the national capital for the huge win in the MCD elections.

“We thank the people of the city for trusting us with MCD. The people of the national capital have helped defeat the most corrupt and most negative party of the world for a glorious win to Arvind Kejriwal,” Sisodia wrote in a tweet in Hindi. “For us, it’s not just a huge win, it’s a huge responsibility too.”

Celebrations for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s victory in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) election got underway at the party’s office in New Delhi, where supporters were seen holding party flags, handing out sweets, and dancing to the sound of drums.

While the BJP won 100 wards, the AAP won 136 of them. According to the most recent counting trends, the Congress came in a distant third place after winning 10 wards.

The mood at the AAP’s office on Rouse Avenue was celebratory since morning with songs blaring through loudspeakers and the entire premises decked up with colourful balloons.

Supporters and leaders, including Gopal Rai, Atishi and Durgesh Pathak, began congregating at the office as voting continued and the AAP’s numbers began to swing in its favour. As fans danced to the AAP’s official election song, “MCD mein Arvind Kejriwal,” billboards outside the building said, “acche honge 5 saal, MCD mein bhi Kejriwal.”

Party workers were glued to LED screens showing the newest trends as counting got underway at 8 am. They also monitored social media, and several of them were observed tweeting nonstop as the office was being prepared to celebrate the party’s first victory in a local election.

Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal is expected to address people after the results.

While the AAP had fielded 138 women candidates, the BJP and the Congress had nominated 136 and 129, respectively.

The high-stakes election to the 250 wards of the MCD was held on December 4, sealing the electoral fate of 1,349 candidates in voting machines. A voter turnout of 50.48 per cent was registered in the elections.

This year, the highest polling percentage (65.72) has been recorded in ward no. 5 (Bakhtawarpur), while the lowest (33.74 per cent) was registered in ward no. 145 (Andrews Ganj).
