Delhi Enveloped in Dense Fog: Travel Advisory Issued Amidst Severe Cold
National Desk, 15th January: As winter intensifies, Delhi finds itself shrouded in thick fog, causing disruptions and safety concerns. The Delhi airport has issued a travel advisory due to significantly reduced visibility, urging passengers to check with airlines for updated flight information before embarking on their journey. This precautionary measure is in response to potential flight operation impacts resulting from the low visibility conditions.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘cold alert’ for parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, indicating a persistent cold wave. In Delhi, the minimum temperature plummeted to 4 degrees Celsius in the RK Puram area, highlighting the severity of the cold. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has also reached the ‘severe’ category, compounded by smog—a mix of smoke and fog—further diminishing visibility and air quality.
Travellers faced inconveniences as adverse weather conditions affected IndiGo flight operations on January 14, 2024. The airline expressed regret for any inconvenience caused, keeping passengers informed about delays and cancellations.
Given the prevailing conditions, the Delhi transport department has prohibited construction activities and the operation of specific vehicles to alleviate pollution levels. Night shelters have been established to provide warmth and refuge for the homeless, offering blankets, beds, hot water, and food.
In response to the foggy conditions, the Delhi Education Department has adjusted school timings, instructing schools not to commence classes before 9 a.m. or extend them beyond 5 p.m. until further notice. This decision follows the temporary closure of schools for nursery to class 5 earlier in the month due to severe fog.
Residents and travelers are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions during this period of reduced visibility and severe cold. The advisory from Delhi airport serves as a reminder to prioritize safety and plan ahead when traveling under challenging weather conditions.
