Delhi Police Arrest “India’s Biggest Car Thief”

Guwahati: The Delhi Police apprehended “India’s biggest car thief” on Tuesday. He is suspected of stealing more than 5,000 cars from various locations across the nation.

The accused identified as 52-year-old Anil Chauhan.

According to police officials, Chauhan was accused of leading an opulent lifestyle and owning houses in Delhi, Mumbai, and the North East.

Police also claimed that Anil is the biggest car thief in the country, and has allegedly stolen more than 5,000 cars over the course of the last 27 years.

The Special Staff of the Central Delhi Police captured Anil from the Desh Bandhu Gupta Road after acting on specific information.

The police also said that Anil is currently involved in smuggling weaponry. He allegedly transported weapons from Uttar Pradesh to the North Eastern states where he supplied them to outlawed organisations.

Anil used to operate autorickshaws while residing in Delhi’s Khanpur area, and he began carjacking after 1995. He stole Maruti 800 vehicles during that time.

Additionally, Anil Chauhan used to steal automobiles across the nation and ship them to Nepal, Jammu & Kashmir, and North Eastern regions.

According to authorities, he also killed a few cab drivers while committing larceny.

He subsequently relocated and settled in Assam.

Additionally, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a case against him for money laundering.

Anil was detained multiple times once by the Assam Police in 2015 together with a Congress MLA. He was imprisoned for five years before being freed in 2020. There are 180 cases registered against him.

Anil Chauhan worked for the Assam government as a Class-I contractor. Later, all of his belongings were taken during a raid by the Enforcement Directorate. Following the bank’s sale of all of his belongings, he once more began stealing.

The accused was well-known in the northeastern state for smuggling rhinoceros horn.
