Derailment in Assam Disrupts Goods Train Services, Tripura Faces Shortage
Northeast Desk, 7th May: A derailment incident in Assam’s Dima Hasao district has led to the disruption of goods train services, causing concern for the Tripura government, which has been grappling with a shortage of goods since April 26.
The derailment occurred in the Jatinga area of Assam, resulting in the suspension of goods train services to Tripura. As a consequence, the northeastern state is experiencing a scarcity of essential commodities, prompting the Tripura government to impose restrictions on the sale of fuel due to low stock levels.
Despite efforts by the North East Frontier Railway (NFR) to restore services, the restoration deadline of May 7 was not met, with the railway authorities seeking an additional three days to address the issue. The NFR has deployed over 300 workers for restoration work at the site of the derailment.
While passenger train services remain unaffected, the disruption in goods train services has significantly impacted the supply of foodgrains to Tripura. To assess the situation and address the shortage, Tripura’s Additional Secretary for Food and Civil Supplies, Nirmal Adhikari, convened a meeting with representatives of the Tripura Merchants’ Association and Tripura Wholesale Grocery Merchants’ Association. During the meeting, officials reassured merchants about the state’s food stock, which is estimated to last for approximately a month.
Despite the challenges posed by the disruption in goods train services, officials urge citizens not to panic, emphasizing that the government is actively working to restore normalcy and ensure the availability of essential items in Tripura.
