Despite Assam’s DGP GP Singh Warning, Assam Youth Joins Banned ULFA-I

Guwahati, 30th October: In a worrisome development, despite the warning issued by Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh against joining militant groups, another young man from the state has reportedly joined the banned militant outfit ULFA-I.

The individual in question is identified as Palash Konwar, hailing from Damoikhati in Borpathar, Dibrugarh District. A video circulating on social media showcases Konwar pledging allegiance to the ULFA-I, sparking concern and anxiety within his family.

Konwar’s family has made an appeal to ULFA-I’s Commander-in-Chief, Paresh Baruah, seeking the safe return of their loved one.

In a related incident, a youth from Bajali district who joined ULFA-I in 2022 was purportedly executed for attempting to escape their camp in Myanmar. The deceased, Pranab Axom, also known as Abhilash Kalita, had allegedly made an escape attempt alongside another member, Deep Axom, alias Tanmoy Bora. This resulted in their death sentences by ULFA-I.

Abhilash’s father has urged Paresh Baruah to clarify his stance on the matter and has also drawn attention to the reportedly poor conditions in the ULFA-I camp. According to his statement, the cadres there are purportedly provided with only ‘Parimal Rice’ and ‘Lai Xaak’ for sustenance, served twice daily.
