Detained MP Amritpal Singh’s Family and Counsel Visit Him In Assam Jail After Electoral Victory
Guwahati, 5th June: Following his resounding victory in the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency in Punjab, Amritpal Singh, detained leader of ‘Waris Punjab De,’ received a visit from his wife and legal counsel at Dibrugarh Jail, Assam, where he is currently incarcerated. Singh’s legal representative, Rajdev Singh Khalsa, addressed the media during the visit, outlining their strategy moving forward. “The further strategy is of getting bail. The government has to release him, they have no alternative,” Khalsa asserted, underscoring Singh’s dedication to combating drug use in Punjab. He emphasized that Singh’s arrest was perceived as unjust and against the will of the people.
Singh’s electoral victory, despite being behind bars, highlights the widespread support he enjoys in Punjab. Securing a decisive win with a margin of 197,120 votes against Congress candidate Kulbir Singh Zira, Singh garnered 404,430 votes, significantly surpassing his competitors. Despite campaigning from his jail cell in Assam, Singh emerged victorious, showcasing the strength of his platform and the trust placed in him by the electorate.
Singh’s detention under the National Security Act (NSA) has been a contentious issue, with supporters advocating for his release. Despite his imprisonment, the Returning Officer for the Khadoor Sahib constituency issued Singh’s election certificate to his family members, marking a significant political triumph amid challenging circumstances.
