Devastating Fire in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai District Destroys Homes and Eateries
Aizawl: A massive fire ravaged Diltlang village in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district early Thursday morning, March 27, destroying at least eight houses and four eateries. The blaze, which broke out around 1:30 am, was quickly tackled by locals and police, preventing it from spreading further.
Authorities confirmed there were no casualties, though the extent of the property damage is still being evaluated. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Diltlang village is located approximately 155 kilometers from Aizawl, the state capital.
This incident follows a major fire on March 17 in Aizawl, which devastated the City Centre Treasury market near the Assembly House, destroying half of the complex and affecting 60 businesses.
Mizoram has faced numerous fire-related incidents in recent years. According to the state’s Environment, Forests & Climate Change Department, 3,612 fires occurred across the state in 2024 alone, damaging nearly 4,000 hectares of land. Of these, 116 were forest fires, while 3,496 were linked to jhum cultivation practices.
Over the past seven years, 278 homes have been destroyed by fires, resulting in 22 deaths. Last year alone, 40 homes were lost to fires, with four fatalities, and 2022 saw the highest number of fire-related deaths, with 15 casualties.
