Devotees Flock to Kamakhya Temple on Somvati Amavasya for Ancestral Blessings

Guwahati: Thousands of devotees thronged the Kamakhya Devi temple in Guwahati on Monday morning to observe Somvati Amavasya, a sacred occasion in the Hindu calendar marked by ancestral worship and spiritual rituals. The day holds profound religious significance, especially when the new moon coincides with a Monday—a rare alignment that believers consider especially auspicious.

Pilgrims arrived early at the hilltop shrine to offer prayers and perform rituals such as ceremonial bathing, charity, and homage to forefathers, acts believed to absolve ‘Pitru Dosha’ and invite ancestral blessings. The atmosphere around the temple was filled with chants, incense, and the quiet devotion of worshippers.

Among the faithful were Neeraj and Neelam Pathak from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. “I feel very good. It was a good Darshan,” Neeraj shared, while Neelam added, “I liked it very much; it was very relaxed.” Their sentiments echoed the mood of many who made the spiritual journey to the iconic temple.

The Kamakhya temple, a major Shakti Peetha and one of Assam’s most revered religious destinations, saw a continuous influx of pilgrims throughout the morning. Devotees from across India travelled to the site, drawn by the spiritual potency of Somvati Amavasya, which they believe brings peace, prosperity, and divine grace to their families.

As rituals continued under the temple’s ancient spires, the observance of this celestial convergence served as a powerful moment of collective faith and spiritual renewal.
