DGP Bhaskar Mahanta: Dangerous Terror Module Busted In Assam

Guwahati: In a major crackdown in the north-eastern state of Assam, one more person has been arrested for allegedly having links with proscribed outfits from Morigaon.

Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on Friday said that with this, a hazardous module with connections to worldwide terrorism was dismantled.

The accused has been identified as Afsaruddin Bhuyan. He is reportedly a resident of Milanpur’s Ward 3 in the Morigaon district of Assam.

He was detained on suspicion of having ties to the banned groups Al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT).

The director general of the Assam Police (DGP) announced on Twitter that the operation was the result of months-long operation by the state police in cooperation with federal authorities.

The synchronised operation was conducted between district polices of Goalpara, Guwahati, Morigaon, Barpeta and Special Branch of Assam Police, DGP Mahanta informed.

It needs to be mentioned that a total of nine people were arrested in anti-terrorist operations in several parts of the state.

DGP Mahanta tweeted, “In a synchronized and coordinated operation between District Polices of Goalpara, Guwahati, Morigaon, Barpeta and Special Branch of Assam Police, a dangerous module with international terror linkages of ABT/AQIS was busted by @assampolice.”

In a series of tweets, the Assam Police DGP shared information regarding the operation and arrests.

He wrote, “The operation was a part of months long intelligence operation run by Assam Police in collaboration with Central Agencies. The operation led to the busting of the financial linkages of al Qaeda and its affiliate (ABT) in India. Further action is on the cards.”

In another tweet he further wrote, “The help and assistance of the community in an effort to purge the anti-national elements is immense. Among the arrested accused, one Afsaruddin Bhuyan from Morigaon has links with AQIS/ABT and one Mustafa is an important financial conduit.”

“They were running madrassas named Jamiul Huda Madrassa at Sahariapam & Banat Madrassa in Horuchala, Morigaon,” DGP Mahanta added.
