Dhing Gangrape Case: Police Arrest One Suspect, Search for Others Continues

Guwahati, August 23 Police have apprehended Tafazul Islam, one of the three men accused in the brutal gangrape case in Dhing. His arrest follows a detailed investigation that identified him as a suspect. Authorities are still working to locate and arrest the remaining two individuals involved in the crime.

In the aftermath of the incident, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has linked the rise in such crimes to areas where indigenous Assamese populations have become minorities. Sarma stated, “In areas where indigenous Assamese people have become minorities, crimes like this Dhing rape have risen; we must identify our real enemies,” emphasizing the need for increased vigilance in these areas.

The case has deeply shocked the state. The assault involved three unidentified men who arrived on a motorcycle and attacked a minor girl returning from tuition. The assailants left her in a forest, where she was found by locals and subsequently taken to Dhing FRU before being referred to Nagaon for further treatment due to her severe condition.

In reaction to the crime, the Dhing Regional Students’ Union has declared a complete shutdown of the area, demanding the immediate arrest of the remaining suspects. As a result, all shops, markets, and educational institutions in Dhing are closed. Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed to manage the situation and ensure security.

Assam Director-General of Police GP Singh visited Dhing today, assuring that the police are committed to bringing all perpetrators to justice. “We will crack the case and take it to its logical conclusion,” Singh promised, underscoring the police’s commitment to the safety of women and girls.
