Dhubri Medical College Performs First Spinal Surgery, Assam CM Lauds Milestone
DHUBRI, ASSAM – In a landmark achievement for Assam’s healthcare sector, Dhubri Medical College and Hospital successfully conducted its first-ever spinal surgery, marking a major milestone in the institution’s medical capabilities.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the hospital, highlighting the state’s advancements in specialized healthcare and encouraging citizens to seek treatment at government medical colleges. Taking to social media platform X, Sarma underscored the availability of expert doctors and advanced medical facilities in Assam’s public hospitals, assuring that major procedures are covered under government schemes, eliminating financial burdens for patients.
According to Dr. Ankumoni Saikia, Principal of Dhubri Medical College, the surgery was performed on a 16-year-old girl from Dhubri district, who was diagnosed with a spinal tumor that led to a post-traumatic fracture and neurological deficits. A team of skilled surgeons successfully removed the tumor, performed decompression, and fixed a spinal screw to stabilize her condition. The procedure was conducted under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, ensuring zero cost for the patient.
Dr. Saikia also revealed that the hospital is now equipped to perform other complex surgeries, including total knee replacements and hip replacements, further solidifying its role in providing advanced medical care to the region. This milestone reinforces the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and expanding specialized treatment options in Assam’s medical colleges.
